Biography
CANTO NONO began its activities in February 1992.
Rooted in the a cappella music tradition, the group is formed by eight singers (four female voices and four male voices).
In 1993, CANTO NONO organized and participated in two seminars with Ward Swingle, founder of the Swingle Singers in the 1960s.
The work done with this musician was crucial for the octet's evolution, and they continue to include works by Ward Swingle in their repertoire, some of which were specifically arranged for CANTO NONO.
Following this work, CANTO NONO's first discographic recording was published by the newspaper "Público" and commercially released in May 1997.
In 1998, the first track from this CD, "El Paisanito," was nominated for a best performance award in the "Folk/World Music" category by CASA (Contemporary A Cappella Society of America), an American association that brings together vocal groups from around the world. This track was also included in a compilation of the best a cappella music recordings from that same year, featuring other names such as The King's Singers, The Bobs, and The Concordia Choir.
Diverse musical experiences led the group to record the soundtrack composed by Jorge Constante Pereira for «Furnas/Uma visita» (Furnas/A Visit), an installation by Ângelo de Sousa;
To provide the vocal support for the street performance «Queima do Judas» (Burning of Judas), organized by the Porto City Council;
To be part of the theater play «Mais Mar Houvesse» (If There Were More Sea), directed by João Paulo Seara Cardoso with music by Jorge Constante Pereira, and the play «Hamlet Machine», created and directed by Isabel Barros and João Paulo Seara Cardoso with music by Roberto Neulichedl;
To participate in albums by João Loio, Jean Sommer, and Sérgio Godinho, and in the CD «Uma outra história» (Another Story), released by FNAC for World Music Day;
To participate in the soundtrack for the film «A Raiz do Coração» (The Root of the Heart) by Paulo Rocha, with music by José Mário Branco; To perform the choral part of the opera «Cosi Fan Tutte», conducted by Bertrand Brouder and staged by José Ramalho;
CANTO NONO also produced the show «Sons do Porto – A Cidade a oito vozes» (Sounds of Porto – The City in Eight Voices), with Musical Direction by José Mário Branco and texts by Carlos Tê, Germano Silva, and Manuel Pina, among others, selling out all performances;
The track «Etelvina» by Sérgio Godinho, arranged by José Mário Branco, received the "Best a cappella jazz song" award, promoted by CASA;
CANTO NONO has performed concerts throughout Portugal and abroad, namely in Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, and Macau. Notable performances include participation in the Macau Arts Festival, the concert «Viagem ao Mundo das Vozes» (Journey to the World of Voices) as part of the MÚSICA PARA TODOS (MUSIC FOR ALL) project, the concert at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and the show «2012 FM STÉREO» at the Rivoli Municipal Theater;
CANTO NONO's repertoire is traditionally a cappella. However, their work also includes projects with Jazz instrumentalists, such as Carlos Azevedo, António Augusto-Aguiar, António Ferro, Quiné, among others, in Concerts Homage to Gershwin, promoted by the Regional Delegation of the North of the Ministry of Culture, at the Estremoz Jazz Festival, and in the project «Musicalidades – Encontros Musicais de Montemor-o-Novo» (Musicalities – Musical Encounters of Montemor-o-Novo).
